Lebanese activists Marwan Maalouf arrested in Lebanon
MENAPOLIS
31 May, 2013
Today Marwan Maalouf, a Lebanese activist and lawyer, and founder and Principal at the Middle East policy organization Menapolis, was arrested in downtown Beirut while
protesting the undemocratic extension of governing mandate of the Parliament of Lebanon.
Earlier this afternoon, the Parliament met and voted in favor of a 17 month extension on its four year mandate, previously set to expire on 20 June 2013. The vote, taken without public consultation or input, was a violation of Lebanon’s democratic process.
In response to the vote, a number of activists gathered nearby Nejmeh Square, known also as Place de l’Etoile or Parliament Square. Their rights to free expression and assembly in public spaces are protected under the Lebanese constitution. Maalouf was arrested when he attempted to place a tent in the center of the Square in symbolic protest.
We demand the immediate release of Marwan Maalouf in recognition of his rights as a
Lebanese citizen.
