Turkey: the Struggle for its Future
|
NATO ally Turkey, long a stable, reliable and pluralistic Western partner on Europe’s gateway to the Middle East, has been shaken by a swirl of corruption allegations on a multi-billion dollar scale against members of the government of Prime Minister Recep Erdogan. In the lead up to the March 30 municipal elections, seen by many as a referendum on his leadership, Erdogan has responded with mass dismissals and censorship, including attempts this week to ban Twitter and YouTube. Domestic uncertainties have played out against increased international flashpoints in Turkey’s neighborhood -- from civil war in Syria to the Black Sea region now destabilized by Russia’s seizure of Crimea.
Join us by phone as we discuss the implications for Turkey and the region with three experts on the ground.
