University of Edinburgh: Post Doctoral Fellow in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies
The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures is looking to appoint three Post-Doctoral Fellows in English Literature, European Languages and Cultures, and Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies to join its vibrant research community and to undertake a defined research project in one of these three areas. The successful applicants will play a key role in the research life of both the appointed area and the School, which has a thriving Graduate School and international postgraduate community.
University of Pennsylvania: Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities on the theme of Violence
Five Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities are available for the 2013-2014 academic year on the general theme of Violence. Open to untenured junior scholars holding a PhD (no more than eight years out of doctorate). Research proposals from all humanistic disciplines and allied areas (e.g., anthropology, history of science) are eligible, except for educational curriculum-building and the performing arts (scholars of performing arts are eligible).
Fellows teach one undergraduate course during the year in addition to conducting their research (must be in residence during fellowship year: September 1 - May 31). Stipend: $46,500 plus single-coverage health insurance and a $2,500 research fund.
Applications are accepted via secure online webform only. (Do not email your application; those submissions will be ineligible.) Please also note that the committee cannot comment on the appropriateness of proposals in advance. A careful reading of the Violence topic description and the application form itself generally answers most questions.
Application deadline: October 15, 2012
Germany: New award for researchers from developing countries
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is announcing a new award to honour researchers from developing and transition countries: the Georg Forster Research Award. Valued at 60,000 EUR, it will be granted this year to four leading researchers who will be invited to conduct a development-related research project together with specialist colleagues in Germany. The closing date for nominations is 15 May 2012.
Researchers in all disciplines who have achieved international visibility with their research to date are eligible to be nominated. The nominations should be made by academics at German universities or research institutions.
The award takes its name from the Georg Forster Research Fellowships, a tool with which the Humboldt Foundation has sponsored excellent researchers from developing and transition countries since 1997. The objective is to promote research and teaching in these countries as well as international cooperation and the mutual transfer of knowledge and methods. It is hoped that this will help industrialised and developing countries to discover solutions to the challenges they need to address jointly, such as environmental issues and climate change, sustainable energy supplies and the fight against infectious disease.
Funding for the award is being provided by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
