Algeria: No to Violence, Yes to Genuine Social Dialogue

Egypt, CTUWS, December 8, 2010: While thousands of Tunisian people pay farewell to Mohamed Bouazizi, the young man who died after he has set himself on fire because of being failed to find a job opportunity, an act which led to theriotsthat widespread in Tunisia against unemployment, 17 Algerian states have exploded in protests against high prices and unemployment. As the Tunisian security forces violently confronted the protests with all repressive means, the Algerian security forces have done the same with protesting people; this led to flaring confrontations up and breaking violent clashes out between demonstrators and security forces in several areas in Algeria. Three persons have been killed and dozens more injured.

Prices of Basic commodities got higher due to the highly estimated profits that have been added to the original prices by producers and importers of these commodities, as Algerian Minister of Trade Mustapha Benbada said.

The CTUWS condemns using violence against the Algerian citizens who emerged to express their anger of poor living conditions and services, and increasing rates of unemployment. Real problems that come out from policies of successive governments in Algeria, and the exclusion of political and trade union forces that truly interacting with social issues through falsifying Algerian people's will.

Algeria needs today, not tomorrow, a courageous initiative to open a genuine dialogue with all political, trade unions, and civil society bodies to reach a new social contract that guarantees real freedoms of expression and association, social justice for Algerians, and a true developing strategy that could achieve progress for Algeria.
