Ministry of Interior suspends 280 policemen

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior suspended 280 policemen from active duty and discharged 1,164 lower-ranking policemen, for charges of misconduct and abuse of power. Over the past year, 433 complaints have been filed by citizens against policemen, 97 of which were disregarded entirely by the prosecution office, and 329 of which are still under investigation. This suspension occurs in tandem with a report recently issued by the National Association for the Defense of Rights and Freedoms, which documents a long history of police brutality in Egypt, ranging from rape to torture cases-some of which result in death.
