The chief of staff of the Egyptian armed forces Lt. Gen. Sami Annan met on Thursday with US Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Alexander Vershbow to discuss the possibility of supporting the process of democratization in Egypt.
The meeting, which was attended by several members of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) as well as US Ambassador to Egypt Margaret Scobey, also revolved around bilateral relations between the two countries, and the developments and rapid changes taking place, both on the local and regional levels.
Annan, who has been armed forces chief of staff since 2005, traveled to the US in late January only to have his visit cut short by former President Hosni Mubarak in light of the 25 January revolution.
A page on the social networking site Facebook claiming to be Annan’s personal page appeared recently with statements claiming to be from Annan himself saying that Israel had no right to interfere in the Egyptian decision to open the Rafah Crossing to the Gaza Strip, which Egypt had previously announced it intends to open on a permanent basis.
However, on their official Facebook page, the SCAF denied the statements were made by Annan, saying the page was fake and nothing to do with general.
