With revolutionary change sweeping through the Middle East and North Africa and violence erupting in Libya, U.S. policy toward the region is quickly evolving. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry will discuss the challenges for the United States and his policy recommendations.

Speaker
John Kerry is the senior senator from Massachusetts and chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He also holds senior positions on the Finance, Commerce, and Small Business Committees. He was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and is now serving his fifth term. He was the Democratic candidate for president in 2004. Kerry served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts.
 
Moderator
Marwan Muasher is vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment, where he oversees the Endowment's research in Washington and Beirut on the Middle East. Muasher served as foreign minister (2002–2004) and deputy prime minister (2004–2005) of Jordan, and his career has spanned the areas of diplomacy, development, civil society, and communications.

The Carnegie Middle East Program combines in-depth local knowledge with incisive comparative analysis to examine economic, socio-political, and strategic interests in the Arab world. Through detailed country studies and the exploration of key cross-cutting themes, the Carnegie Middle East Program, in coordination with the Carnegie Middle East Center, provides analysis and recommendations in both English and Arabic that are deeply informed by knowledge and views from the region. The Carnegie Middle East Program has special expertise in political reform and Islamist participation in pluralistic politics throughout the region. The program produces the Arab Reform Bulletin, a monthly analysis of political reform in the Middle East.
