The Islamic Republic of Iran - Not ready to join the Council of Human Rights

Resolution 60/251 of the General Assembly in its introduction affirms that "while the significance of national and regional particularities and various historical, cultural and religious backgrounds must be borne in mind, all States, regardless of their political, economic and cultural systems, have the duty to promote and protect all human rights and fundamental freedoms".

Currently the Islamic Republic of Iran not only does not promote nor defend human rights and fundamental freedoms, it violates several mechanisms of the system of Human Rights that the United Nations has had the opportunity to celebrate in recent years. In addition, several mandate holders have lamented the lack of cooperation from the Iranian authorities. The recent periodic review of the Islamic Republic of Iran in February allowed all parties to see the extent and severity of human rights violations and that responses by government officials were less than reassuring. The General Assembly of the United Nations in December 2009 adopted a resolution condemning violations of human rights and freedoms on the part of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

For these reasons, the undersigned non-governmental organisations call upon members of the Assembly to reject the candidacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Council on Human Rights.
