Activists arrested during Khaled Saeed retrial

Security forces on Tuesday arrested six activists outside Alexandria criminal court, where the retrial of alleged killers of Khaled Saeed was taking place.

The activists were arrested for insulting the Interior Ministry after chanting against police officers.

The Alexandria court meanwhile adjourned the retrial of the two policemen charged with killing Saeed until 2 December to hear the testimonies of medical officials.

The 6 April Movement claimed police arrested the group's spokesperson and another 12 activists during the protest, aimed at expressing solidarity with Saeed who was killed in broad daylight by security forces in Sidi Gaber in 2010.

Saeed's murder became a symbol of police brutality and is widely believed to have helped trigger the 25 January revolution, which started out as a protest against police brutality on National Police Day in 2011. A medical examiner’s report following his death also sparked widespread outrage after murder and torture were ruled out as causes of death. Initial medical reports claimed Saeed had died of asphyxiation after swallowing a bag of marijuana to hide it from police.
