The Filmmakers Syndicate chose the Egyptian film "Winter of Discontent" for submission to the Academy Awards to compete for the Best Foreign Language Film.

This came following a meeting at the syndicate with the participation of director Omar Abdel Aziz and film critic Samir Farid.

The film is directed by prominent independent film director Ibrahim al-Batout and stars Amr Waked and Farah Youssef.

The movie was produced in 2013 and is set during the revolution of January 2011. It tells three stories dating from this significant time in Egypt. The first is about a state security officer, the second about a TV presenter in the middle of events and the third tells the story of an engineer relation to the revolution.

The movie took part in several international film festivals, including the Venice and Dubai international film festivals. It has also been chosen to open the 35th Cairo International Film Festival.
