                                           Coalition of Egyptian Organizations

The Coalition of Egyptian Organizations in North America extends its condolences to the Egyptian people on the occasion of the criminal bombing of the Two Saints Church in Alexandria just 20 minutes after the beginning of the New Year.

The Coalition hopes that this heinous event will be understood by the Egyptian authorities as more than a security issue, but a warning sign that traditional botched up solutions need to be revised into more sincere and genuine effort.

What happened in Alexandria is but a symptom and harvest of the stifling political and cultural status quo. The political and religious establishments are equally responsible for it; as they are focusing on the short sighted effort to keep the present precarious internal balances with a view to abort any genuine political and/or cultural reform.

The Coalition warns that this latest Alexandria massacre is but a prelude to more menacing events, the abortion of which can only be achieved through major overhauling of the Egyptian political process, and much more receptivity towards profound religious reform.

The so far plausible possibility of an Al Qaeda involvement indicates how vulnerable the draconian security apparatus in Egypt is, as the bulk of its efforts is focused on suppressing any plurality in the Egyptian society, thus suppressing the Egyptian people rather than providing security to them.
