Egyptian Islamists, Activists And Democrats Partake In Conference Of Center For The Study Of Islam And Democracy In Washington

A number of Egyptian Islamists, activists and democrats will attend the 10th annual conference of the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID), which will be held in Washington on May 5 next. This year's conference will discuss the future of relations between the US and the Muslim world in light of the new U.S. administration.

The conference's official website said the conference will be attended by Kamal al-Halbawi, head of the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and the former spokesman for the international organization of the Muslim Brotherhood, Sarah Khourshid, chief editor of "politics in depth" department at IslamOnline website, Atef al-Sa'dawi, a researcher in the Bibliotheca Alexandria's Arab Reform Forum, and Abdel Latif Saeed, coordinator of the World Center of the Koran in Washington. However the security services prevented the latter from traveling last Friday.

Speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm Saeed, the half-brother of the leader of the Koranists Group Ahmed Sobhi Mansour, said: "There are no new reports on the issue of my travel to the conference. I'm still prevented from travel."

In his paper, al-Halbawi will discuss the topic of "Shura in Islam is the spirit of democracy," which is, unfortunately, absent from the Islamic countries at the time being. He added that the regimes in the Muslim countries have nothing to do with humanity and Islam in many aspects and that he as a Muslim living in the West knows well the values enjoyed by the democratic societies.
