The 2010 Law and Leadership Summer Program
June 7-25, 2010

The deadline for applications has now been extended to April 30th! There are still a few spaces available for the 2010 class of KARAMAH's Law and Leadership Summer Program! The three-week workshop brings together Muslim women from the U.S. and around the world to learn about Islamic law, conflict resolution, and leadership to help them become forces of positive change in their communities. The program features lectures by professors from Harvard Law School and Wharton.

KARAMAH will host a lecture, “Governing Diversity: Law, Islam, and Pluralism in the Modern World,” featuring Dr. Anver M. Emon of the University of Toronto ’s Faculty of Law. Dr. Emon will discuss the challenges of governance in pluralistic systems, drawing examples from both the Islamic legal tradition concerning non-Muslims and recent legal developments in the US , UK , and France regarding the regulation of covered Muslim women.

KARAMAH Co-Hosts Film Screening and Panel Discussion, What a Billion Muslims Really Think: Human Rights and Muslim Women
April 9, 2010

In cooperation with the El-Hibri Charitable Foundation and Unity Productions Foundation, KARAMAH held a film screening of Inside Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think and a panel discussion, "What a Billion Muslims Really Think: Human Rights and Muslim Women." The panel featured Dr. Azizah Y. al-Hibri, Esq., Founder and Chairperson, KARAMAH; Alexander Kronemer, Executive Producer, Unity Productions Foundation; and Dalia Mogahed, Senior Analyst and Executive Director of the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies. The panel discussion focused on issues relating to human rights for Muslim women as revealed in the world’s first major opinion poll of Muslims around the globe.

KARAMAH Honored at S.I.S.T.E.R.S.' 4th Annual Fundraising Tea
April 17, 2010

 
On Saturday, April 17, KARAMAH was honored at a fundraising tea event held by Sisters in Solidarity to Educate, Respond & Serve (S.I.S.T.E.R.S) at Dar Al-Noor mosque in Manassas , Virginia . KARAMAH Presents a Briefing on New CEDAW Concept Paper at the United Nations
March 12, 2010

The briefing addressed issues related to the rights of Muslim women and Islamic law currently under debate within the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) at the United Nations, and initiatives that KARAMAH has taken to address them. In particular, KARAMAH presented its newest position paper responding to a current amendment under consideration within CEDAW regarding the economic consequences of divorce on women.

KARAMAH Hosts Visit With Delegation from Pakistan
April 20, 2010

The group was visiting the United States on a trip sponsored by the State Department’s Intern ational Visitor Leadership Program for a special educational project, “Religion in America: Religious Pluralism and Tolerance.” The participants discussed the difference between cultural and religious influences on the rights of women and their applications in Muslim societies.

Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni delivered an overview of rape in war-torn countries and its impact on Muslim Women in Sudan and Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Dr. Raja Naji Makkawi offered an analysis of Islamic legal perspectives on rape in war-like conditions.

Dispatch from Europe: KARAMAH Holds Islamic Law and Leadership Workshops in Brussels and Antwerp , Belgium

In March 2010, KARAMAH held a two-part program in Brussels and Antwerp , Belgium , which included interactive training sessions in leadership and advanced Islamic law. The March program in Belgium was designed as a condensed version of KARAMAH’s three-week Law and Leadership Summer Program, which takes place annually in Washington , DC .

This program was made possible by recent funding from the Sigrid Rausing Trust, allowing KARAMAH to advance its initiatives in Europe with the goal of reaching more women and providing solutions to the everyday challenges faced by European Muslims. KARAMAH held a series of Islamic law and leadership workshops in Belgium , with the first workshop taking place in November 2009. During the first workshop, KARAMAH held a one-day training in Islamic law, conflict resolution and leadership and established a steering committee to strengthen its presence in Europe and create long-term, substantive programs responding to the needs of Muslim women in Europe . The KARAMAH-EU steering committee has played a pivotal role in expanding KARAMAH’s Law and Leadership Program in Europe .
