December 2010 Newsletter

Karamah is proud to announce the launch of our new newsletter and website! The website grew out of a desire to make our materials more interactive, more comprehensive, and easier to use. As you read through our newsletter you'll find numerous links that take you back to our site and we hope you'll take a moment to explore further when you're there.  You'll find a Research section containing original scholarship, a new database listing with resources for women, and a portion of the site where you can ask an authoritative scholar about Islam.

Since our last newsletter,  Karamah has been hard at work hosting educational workshops, holding events, and building our networks. In October, the Karamah EU Steering Committee organized a very successful conference in Belgium where Dr. Azizah al-Hibri gave a lecture based on her article, "An Introduction to Muslim Women's Rights." In November, Karamah held a  widely-attended luncheon in recognition of outstanding women in leadership, with special guest H.E. Houda Ezra Ebrahim Nonoo, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the U.S.

Over the past few months, we have done all this and much, much more.  We hope that you will enjoy the newly redesigned newsletter and website as you learn more about Karamah and our initiatives.

Have a joyous holiday season and a happy new year!

Dr. Azizah Y. al-Hibri

Founder and Chair

For more than 1400 years, the Qur'an and the Sunnah have established and protected women's rights; however, patriarchal interpretations and ignorance have kept women from understanding their God-given rights.
