Twelve Al-Azhar University students have received 17-year prison sentences for their alleged role in on-campus unrest.

The 12 defendants were found guilty of storming the university dean's headquarters and university administrative building.

Hundreds of pro-Muslim Brotherhood students staged a protest on campus Thursday in response to the ruling.

On Thursday students marched from the medical faculty to the university headquarters. They then headed down Mostafa al-Nahas street, off campus.

Quarrels took place between students and motorists after the march arrived at al-Nasr Street, thereby blocking it. They soon returned inside the campus.
