Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy has denounced Israeli authorities' storming Al-Aqsa mosque, claiming the move could stoke religious tensions in the region.

Israeli settlers continued break-ins at Al-Aqsa Mosque are an unacceptable provocation of the feelings of millions of Muslims, Fahmy said in a statement on Thursday.

The foreign minister also condemned the imposition of strict measures on the entry of residents of Jerusalem to the old town as well as the mosque.

He warned that Israeli policies could ignite religious unrest in the already increasingly unstable Middle East.

Fahmy demanded Israeli authorites to back down and halt violations in holy sites and against residents of Jerusalem.
