Celebrating the first Anniversary of Declaration of Trade Union Freedom, the Egyptian Democratic
Labour Congress (EDLC) organized in cooperation with The Center for Trade Union and Workers
Services (CTUWS) an event for trade unions and media on Monday March 12th, 2012. Around 300 of
labour activists participated as Independent Trade Unions’ representatives of several industry sectors.
The event hosted representatives of the interested parties in Trade Union Freedom, led by Dr.
Ahmed Hassan El-Boraiy - the professor of labor legislation, the ex- Minister of Manpower and the
main player in the event, who spoke to attendees confirming his situation which is supporting Trade
Union Freedom and that he was its defender before being a Minister of Manpower, reminding of
campaign history which CTUWS participated in it three years ago, for the law of Trade Union
Freedom.
With interest and welcoming, the attendees received a message from Mr. Juan Somavia, Director-
General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), he said in it: "I had the honor of being in
Egypt, exactly a year ago, when this very important Declaration was announced. Unfortunately, due
to previous commitments on my side, I will not be able to join the workers of Egypt again, and all
those advocating for the right to freedom of association in this event”. Then he ended it saying: "I wish
to send my strong message of support to all the workers of Egypt that played a key role in your
countries remarkable revolution for social justice".
Mr. Mohamed Trabelsi, the Senior consultant of labour activities in (ILO) in the Middle East and
North Africa, participated in the event , and it has been joined by number of Parliament Members,
Mr. Abul Ezz El Hariri (the parliamentary deputy, the president of the parliamentary bloc of
the Alliance of the continuous revolution and the candidate for Presidential election of the
Republic), Mr. Khaled Shaaban the parliamentary deputy (People's Assembly/ First constituency
in Cairo), and Mr. Magdy Alkheriby (People's Assembly/Dekerness constituency in Dakahlia),
and Mr.Sayed Abdel Radi (the Shura Council / Cairo) who all spoke.
In addition, the event was attended by journalists and correspondents of several newspapers, and
it has been covered by three of satellite television channels. It included a presentation of a short
film (video) about Trade Union Freedoms that was prepared by the group "Our Right", that
film which will be presented in the Squares , Cities and Governorates within the Trade Union
Freedoms Campaign which is organized by the Egyptian Democratic Labour Congress (EDLC).
Furthermore, a report has been issued on the year's summary included all stories of achievements and
