Egypt: Egypt is a civil state that has Islamic reference given that 94% of Egyptians are Muslims, said Former Secretary General of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, Mohammad Salim al-Awa.

Al-Awa criticized the Egyptian press for condemning Salfis in recent incidents. They are being accused of the main reason behind the violence, he said.

"Salafis are not monsters," said al-Awa.

“A religious state is governed by clergies who claim they are divinely inspired. But such a state does not exist except in the Vatican. Iran and Israel are not religious state as others claim. A civil state is governed by groups with social, communist, or liberal references. Thus, given that 94 percent of Egyptians are Muslims, Egypt should have Islamic reference. Any changes in the constitutional article that says that the main source of legislation is Islamic, will be an act against the people," said al-Awa.

As for Egypt exporting gas to Israel, both countries are under a truce regarding this matter, said al-Awa at a speech in Mansoura Univeristy.

Al-Awa also criticized the youth marches to the Palestinian borders saying that it was equal to "madness."

According to al-Awa, under the convention signed by Israel, Palestine and Europe, only Egypt has the right to open or close the Rafah Crossing given that it belongs to Egypt.

Al-Awa liked that Nabil al-Araby was chosen to be the Secretary General of the Arab League.

Al-Awa called on the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) to take cautious decisions before taking any action.
