Institute calls on Egypt to reveal whereabouts of detained blogger

The Institute on Religion and Public Policy calls for the immediate release of Egyptian blogger Reda Abderrahman Ali, whose detention in October now appears to be a case of "forced disappearance."

Reda was arrested on Oct. 26 and has since been held in a secret location. According to the International Quranic Center, his family has tried without success to find the 32-year-old in the Egyptian prison system, and launched a silent protest on his behalf in front of the Egyptian Attorney General's office on Nov. 26. They fear he has been tortured and even executed.

Reda's arrest appears to be linked to his membership and support of the Quranist Movement, a group of scholars and thinkers who believe that the interpretation and practice of Islam should be based on the Quran alone. Quranists are also opposed to extremist interpretations of the Quran. The movement's leaders and families have been persecuted in Egypt since 1985 for their religious beliefs.

"Everything from Reda's arrest without charges to his secret detention points to foul play," said Institute President Joseph K. Grieboski. "The Egyptian authorities must immediately reveal his whereabouts and the reasons for his detention, and stop treating peaceful religious minorities as dangerous threats to the country's security."
