Iran Calls for "Azhar" Branch in Tehran to Achieve Rapprochement between Sunnis, Shiites: Iranian Of

Iran called on Azhar University to open a branch in Tehran, Media Advisor to the Iranian Interest Care Office in Cairo Karim Azizi said.

Speaking to the AFP, Azizi said, "This request aims to boost the Iranian-Egyptian ties and bring close together Muslim different sects, especially the Sunnis and the Shiites."

In exclusives to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Iranian official sources said a delegation from the Iranian Interests Care Office in Cairo including Hussein Ragbi, the office head, and Azizi has met with Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Mohamed Sayyed Tantawi on last June, 11th and orally asked him to open a branch for Al-Azhar in Tehran.

The well-known sources added that the Iranian request comes within the framework of the Iranian government's policy to achieve rapprochement between the Sunnis and the Shiites, in addition to serving more than five million Sunni Muslims in Iran. Tantawi was "positive" but the delegation has not received any reply till now. The request may be studied on the part of Al-Azhar, the sources added.

For his part, Al-Azhar Undersecretary Sheik Abdel Fatah Allam told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Iran has not filed an official request for establishing Al-Azhar branch in Tehran and the whole story in nothing but "mere oral talks between Iranian officials and Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh".

If Iran made an official request for establishing Al-Azhar branch in Tehran, Al-Azhar University would hold a meeting under the chairmanship of Tantawi to say the final decision, he added.
