BUILDING CONNECTIONS AMONG THE “CHILDREN OF ABRAHAM”

Middle-school children from the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions will have an opportunity to learn about each other on a deeper level, find common ground, and begin to build a better world together in an innovative program called “Children of Abraham” beginning in January.

In this three-part series, students in grades 6 through 8 will learn about the three Abrahamic religious traditions and meet youths from those traditions for programs that focus on values, themes, and stories that are of importance in the three traditions. Each program will entail comparison of how the different traditions address the value, theme, or story and will include dialogue, arts and crafts, and other activities, as well as a community service component.

On Saturday, January 13, students will explore the scriptural injunction to “Love Your Neighbor as Yourself” (Leviticus 67:18) at the Muslim Community School, 7917 Montrose Road, Potomac, MD 20854. Participants will discuss the meaning of this text, including the concept of the “other,” and compare how the three traditions address this concept.

On Saturday, February 10, at Temple Shalom, 8401 Grubb Road, Chevy Chase, MD 20815, the theme will be “Sacred versus Secular.” In this program, participants will explore a variety of rituals, practices, and objects as a way of seeing the common elements of the three traditions and celebrating the diversity among them.

The third program in the series, which will cover “The Story of Isaac/Ismail,” will be held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 10401 Armory Drive, Kensington, MD 20895, on Saturday, March 10. Participants will explore the story from their own perspectives as well as the perspectives of all three faith traditions.

Each program will run from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The cost of the three-part program is $36 per student.

Middle-school students from all three faiths are invited to participate in “Children of Abraham,” which is supported by a grant from the Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education.
