Bush Describes Israel's Presence in West Bank as ‘Occupation’

US President George Bush ended yesterday the first stop of his Middle East tour by asking Israel to end its “occupation” – it was the first time he used this term – of the West Bank.

He also stressed the necessity to create a Palestinian State, although he ruled out the possibility that this State could be the fruit of terrorism.

He also highlighted the importance of being committed to Israel's security, as this would serve both countries, as well as the region and its stability.

Bush did not propose any specific solutions with regard to Jerusalem, said he knew that this was a difficult issue and called on both parties to work to reach a solution about it.

Meanwhile, the Israeli government spokesman, Mark Regev, announced that talks on the fundamental issues will start next week.

The last part of Bush's visit in Israel before leaving for Kuwait was marked by religion. He visited the Yad Vashem holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, where he prayed wearing the Jewish cap.

He appeared deeply touched as he bowed his head while his eyes filled with tears.

On Thursday, he had visited the Nativity Church and yesterday the Church of the Beatitudes.
